Stop Guessing: How to Hear God’s Voice and Know His Will for Your Life

Church family, let’s be honest for a moment. How many times have you faced a major decision—a job offer, a relationship, a move, a financial choice—and your immediate instinct is to figure it out on your own?
We pull out a piece of paper. We make a pros-and-cons list. We ask our friends what they would do. We look at the natural circumstances. And then, when the stress sets in and the results aren’t what we hoped for, we wonder where God is.
THE NATURAL TRAP: LEANING ON OUR OWN UNDERSTANDING
Here is the hard truth: This is where most Christians fail. We have a natural, human tendency to rely on our own intellect. But the Bible gives us a very clear warning in Proverbs 3:5. It says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.”
Notice it doesn’t say, “Don’t use your brain.” It says, do not lean on it. Do not put your full weight on it. When we lean entirely on our own understanding, our solutions are limited by our limited perspective. We can only see the next five feet of the road. God sees the end from the beginning.
THE DIVINE PROMISE: GOD IS NOT HIDING FROM YOU
Church family, God is not hiding His will from you. He is not playing a game of spiritual hide-and-seek. He is the Good Shepherd, and He wants to lead you.
Jeremiah 33:3 is one of the most beautiful invitations in all of Scripture. God says, “Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.”
He is waiting for you to call. But to hear His direction, we have to change our posture. We have to stop asking, “Lord, bless my plans,” and start asking, “Lord, what are Your plans?”
THE SHIFT: FROM MY PLANS TO GOD’S PLANS
James 1:5 tells us, “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”
He gives generously. He doesn’t scold you for asking. He delights in giving you direction. But you have to quiet your own voice long enough to hear His. You have to surrender the steering wheel.
So today, I want to challenge you. Stop guessing. Stop leaning on your own understanding. Open your Bible, quiet your mind, and ask the Holy Spirit to guide your steps. He will instruct you. He will teach you in the way you should go.
THE ABCs OF SALVATION
Church family, you cannot follow the Guide if you do not know Him. If you have never surrendered your life to Jesus, you are navigating this world without a spiritual compass. The greatest decision you will ever make is the decision to accept His salvation.
- A — ADMIT You’re a Sinner (Romans 3:23)
- B — BELIEVE Jesus Died and Rose (Romans 5:8)
- C — CONFESS Him as Lord (Romans 10:9)
Pray this from your heart: “Lord Jesus, I admit I’m a sinner. I believe You died for me and rose again. I confess You as my Lord and Savior. Write my name in the Lamb’s Book of Life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
5-MINUTE ACTIVATION: SEEKING GOD’S DIRECTION
Take 5 minutes today to stop guessing and start seeking God’s specific direction for your life.
Step 1: READ Proverbs 3:5-6 & Jeremiah 33:3 (60 seconds)
Read these verses out loud. Declare to your soul: “I will not lean on my own understanding. I am calling out to the Lord, and He will answer me.”
Step 2: PRAY the Surrender Prayer (90 seconds)
“Lord, I bring the decision I am facing right now to You. I confess that I have been trying to figure it out on my own. I surrender my pros-and-cons lists, my timeline, and my desires. I ask for Your wisdom, just as James 1:5 promises. Quiet my mind. Speak to my spirit. Show me the way I should go. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Step 3: LISTEN and ACT (60 seconds)
Sit in complete silence for 60 seconds. Do not look at your phone. Do not look at your notes. Just listen. Ask the Holy Spirit to bring a specific Scripture, a name, or a clear thought to your mind. Write down whatever comes to you, and take one small step of obedience toward it today.
Total time: 5 minutes. 
Result: Surrendered. Guided. Obedient
