My dad and I struggled with the definition, “she” in this chapter. So what is that all about?

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

— Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)

Friends and Bible Study Group, let me ask you something.

Why does Solomon keep saying “she” when he talks about wisdom?

“Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.” (v.6)

“Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour.” (v.8)

“Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.” (v.13)

Here’s the answer:

In Hebrew, the word for wisdom—”chokmah”—is feminine. So grammatically, wisdom is “she.”

But it’s deeper than grammar. Wisdom is personified as a woman to show us: this isn’t a concept to study. This is a person to pursue.

Wisdom is like a bride. Like a teacher. Like a protector. Someone to love, embrace, and follow.

And for us as believers? This points to Christ, who IS wisdom (1 Corinthians 1:24). When we pursue wisdom, we’re pursuing Him.

Proverbs 4 isn’t just ancient advice. It’s a battle plan for today.

SECTION 1: THE FATHER’S INSTRUCTION — GENERATIONAL WISDOM

Verses 1-4 set the stage:

“Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law. For I was my father’s son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother. He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.”

— Proverbs 4:1-4 (KJV)

Solomon isn’t speaking as a king. He’s speaking as a son. He’s passing down what his father David taught him.

This is generational wisdom. Father to son. Truth to truth. Life to life.

What this means for us today:

  • 👨‍👦 We receive — Wisdom isn’t self-made. It’s passed down.
  • 📖 We retain — “Let thine heart retain my words” (v.4)
  • 🙏 We obey — “Keep my commandments, and live” (v.4)
  • 🔄 We pass it on — What you receive, you give

In a world of self-help and “find your own truth,” Proverbs 4 says: Listen to the father. Receive the instruction. Keep the commandments. And live.

SECTION 2: GET WISDOM — THE PURSUIT

Verses 5-9 are urgent:

“Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her. She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.”

— Proverbs 4:5-9 (KJV)

Notice the repetition: “Get wisdom, get understanding.” “Get wisdom… with all thy getting get understanding.”

This isn’t casual advice. This is a command. Pursue wisdom like your life depends on it. Because it does.

What “getting wisdom” looks like:

  • 🔍 Seek actively — Don’t wait for wisdom to find you
  • ❤️ Love her — Wisdom isn’t just obeyed. She’s loved (v.6)
  • 🤗 Embrace her — Hold wisdom close, not at arm’s length (v.8)
  • 👑 Exalt her — Honor wisdom above all else (v.8)
  • 🎁 Receive her gifts — Grace, honor, a crown of glory (v.9)

Wisdom isn’t passive. She preserves. She keeps. She promotes. She honors. She crowns.

But you have to get her. Pursue her. Love her. Embrace her.

SECTION 3: TWO PATHS — LIGHT VS. DARKNESS

Verses 14-19 draw a stark contrast:

The Wicked Path The Just Path
“Enter not into the path of the wicked” (v.14) “I have led thee in right paths” (v.11)
“Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it” (v.15) “When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened” (v.12)
“They sleep not, except they have done mischief” (v.16) “When thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble” (v.12)
“The way of the wicked is as darkness” (v.19) “The path of the just is as the shining light” (v.18)
“They know not at what they stumble” (v.19) “That shineth more and more unto the perfect day” (v.18)

This isn’t abstract. This is daily.

Every choice is a step on one path or the other. Every word. Every thought. Every action.

“But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.”

— Proverbs 4:18 (KJV)

The just path isn’t perfect from the start. It shines “more and more.” Growth. Progress. Light increasing until the perfect day.

That’s the Christian life. Not instant perfection. Progressive illumination. Walking in light, growing in wisdom, shining brighter until He comes.

SECTION 4: KEEP THY HEART — THE KEY VERSE

Verse 23 is the anchor of the entire chapter:

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

— Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)

“Keep thy heart.” Not your mind. Not your circumstances. Your heart.

In Hebrew, “heart” (leb) isn’t just emotions. It’s the center of your being—mind, will, emotions, conscience, spirit. The wellspring of your life.

“With all diligence.” Not casually. Not occasionally. With intense, focused effort. Guard your heart like your life depends on it. Because it does.

How to keep your heart in practice:

  • 🛡️ Filter input — What you watch, read, listen to shapes your heart
  • 🙏 Pray constantly — Invite the Holy Spirit to guard your heart
  • 📖 Feed on Scripture — Let God’s Word saturate your inner man
  • 🤝 Accountability — Let others help you guard your heart
  • 🔍 Examine regularly — Ask: “What’s growing in my heart right now?”

“Out of it are the issues of life.” Everything flows from the heart. Words. Actions. Decisions. Destiny.

Guard your heart. Protect your wellspring. Because what’s inside will come out.

SECTION 5: PRACTICAL GUARDRAILS — SPEECH, EYES, FEET, DIRECTION

Verses 24-27 give practical guardrails:

Area Command Application Today
Mouth (v.24) “Put away from thee a froward mouth” Guard your words on social media, in conversations, in private
Eyes (v.25) “Let thine eyes look right on” Focus on what’s true, honorable, pure (Phil 4:8)
Feet (v.26) “Ponder the path of thy feet” Think before you act. Consider the destination of your choices
Direction (v.27) “Turn not to the right hand nor to the left” Stay on the narrow path. Don’t drift. Don’t compromise

These aren’t random rules. They’re guardrails for your heart.

What you say shapes your heart. What you see shapes your heart. Where you walk shapes your heart. Which direction you face shapes your heart.

Guard your heart by guarding your gates.

🕊️ A UNIQUE INVITATION: The Heart Path to Salvation

This isn’t about religion. This is about guarding your heart for the King.

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

— Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)

The wisest decision you’ll ever make… is the simplest.

Here’s the heart path. RIGHT NOW:

✅ A — ACKNOWLEDGE Your Heart Needs Guarding

Your heart is the wellspring of life. But it’s vulnerable. Deception, temptation, fear can enter. Acknowledge your need for Christ to guard your heart.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God.” (Psalm 51:10)

✅ B — BELIEVE Christ Is Your Heart’s Guardian

Jesus doesn’t just save your soul. He guards your heart. His blood cleanses it. His Spirit protects it. His wisdom directs it. Believe it. Receive it.

“I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you.” (Ezekiel 11:19)

✅ C — COMMIT to Daily Heart Guarding

Commit to guarding your heart with all diligence. Filter input. Pray constantly. Feed on Scripture. Stay accountable. Examine regularly. Let Christ keep your heart.

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” (Proverbs 4:23)

👉 Pray this from your heart. Right where you are:

“Lord Jesus, I acknowledge my heart needs guarding. I believe You are my heart’s Guardian. I commit to daily diligence—filtering input, praying constantly, feeding on Your Word. Keep my heart. Make me Yours. Today and forever. Amen.”

💙 If you prayed that. Congratulations.
