Proverbs 5: The Strange Woman vs The Woman of Wisdom
“For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword.”

Friends and Bible study group, I have traveled all over the world, and let me tell you what I’ve seen.
From Southeast Asia. Eastern Europe. Latin America. The Middle East. Everywhere I go, the same pattern repeats.
What I’ve witnessed:
- 👠 Beautiful women using their allure for dishonest gain, luring men into traps
- 👩👧 Single mothers abandoned after children, seeking another man to provide
- 💔 Less attractive women starving for attention, settling for broken promises
- 🏚️ Families shattered. Covenants broken. Men lost in confusion
And the question keeps rising: What is a man supposed to do?
This isn’t just a cultural crisis. This is spiritual warfare. And Solomon saw it coming 3,000 years ago.
Proverbs 4 introduced us to Wisdom as a radiant woman—beautiful, protective, life-giving. Proverbs 5 exposes the counterfeit: the strange woman. The world’s allure. The trap that looks like honey but ends in hell.
The contrast is stark. And your choice determines your destiny.
SECTION 1: THE STRANGE WOMAN — HONEY ON THE LIPS, BITTER IN THE END
Proverbs 5:3-6 doesn’t mince words:
“For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell. Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life, her ways are moveable, that thou canst not know them.”

“Honey on the lips. Bitter in the end.”
This isn’t just about sexual immorality. This is about counterfeit fulfillment. The world offers allure without covenant. Pleasure without peace. Attention without accountability. And it destroys families.
Why Satan targets men through this:
- ⚔️ Distraction — Pulls focus from God’s calling to temporary pleasure
- 🔗 Bondage — “Her steps take hold on hell” (v.5) — addiction, guilt, broken covenants
- 🌑 Confusion — “Her ways are moveable, that thou canst not know them” (v.6) — shifting standards, moral fog
- 💔 Family destruction — Broken marriages, fatherless homes, generational trauma
I’ve seen this worldwide. Men chasing allure, losing their souls. Women using beauty for survival or gain, losing their dignity. Families collateral damage in a spiritual war they didn’t see coming.
But God didn’t leave us blind. He gave us a better path.
SECTION 2: THE WOMAN OF WISDOM — PROVERBS 4’S RADIANT BRIDE
Now look back at Proverbs 4. Wisdom isn’t described as a concept. She’s described as a woman.
“Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.”
— Proverbs 4:6, 7-8 (KJV)
Why does Solomon use this analogy?
Because when a young man sees a truly beautiful woman, he’s lit up. Attracted. Drawn. Solomon says: That’s how you should feel about wisdom. Not lust. Pursuit. Not appetite. Reverence. Not temporary thrill. Lifelong covenant.
What the Woman of Wisdom offers:
- 🛡️ Preservation — “She shall preserve thee” (v.6)
- 👑 Honor — “She shall bring thee to honour” (v.8)
- 🌳 Life — “She is the tree of life to them that lay hold upon her” (v.18)
- 🧭 Direction — Guides you to the right wife, the right path, the right life with God
Wisdom isn’t a literal woman. She’s the personification of God’s truth, discernment, and covenant faithfulness. When a man pursues her, she doesn’t just protect him. She prepares him for the right wife. She shows him how to lead, how to love, how to walk with the Lord seamlessly.
SECTION 3: THE CROSSROADS — WHAT IS A MAN SUPPOSED TO DO?
Here’s the hard truth:
You will face both women. Every day. In your eyes. In your mind. In your digital feed. In your workplace. In your travel. In your loneliness.

So what’s the answer?
Proverbs 5:15-19 gives it:
“Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well… Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.”

“Rejoice with the wife of thy youth.” Not chase strangers. Not settle for counterfeits. Not starve for attention. Covenant faithfulness.
And how do you get there? By pursuing Wisdom first. She’ll guard your eyes. She’ll steady your heart. She’ll lead you to the right path, the right wife, the right life with God.
SECTION 3.5: THE RESCUE PROTOCOL — FOR THOSE ALREADY DROWNING
If you’re reading this and you’re already trapped—pornography, lust, broken covenants, secret compromise—listen closely.
This isn’t condemnation. This is Christ reaching into the water.
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
The enemy wants you to believe you’re too far gone. That your shame is permanent. That your addiction owns you. Lie.
The Rescue Protocol — Grab This Now:
- 🛑 STOP HIDING — Shame thrives in darkness. Bring it into the light. Confess to God immediately (1 John 1:9).
- ✂️ CUT THE ACCESS — Delete the apps. Block the sites. Install accountability software. Starve the flesh.
- 🤝 GET ACCOUNTABILITY — Tell one trusted brother. Isolation is the enemy’s playground. Covenant community is your fortress.
- ⚡ RECEIVE GRACE, NOT GUILT — Guilt says “You failed.” Grace says “Christ paid for it.” Receive His covering. Walk in it.
- 🔌 ACTIVATE THE SPIRIT — When temptation rises, don’t fight it in your strength. Cry out: “Holy Spirit, take over.” He lives in you. He wins for you.
This isn’t willpower. This is warfare. And Christ already won it.
You’re not defined by your fall. You’re defined by the Hand that pulls you out.
SECTION 4: YOUR 5-MINUTE ACTIVATION — GUARD YOUR COVENANT

Pick the path that matches your season:

Write it down. Speak it. Own it.

Read it OUT LOUD. Declare covenant over counterfeits.
Why? Speaking activates faith + rewires neural pathways against temptation.
Step 3: PONDER Two Questions (60 seconds)
- “Where am I tempted by honey that ends bitter?” (Digital feed, loneliness, pride, compromise)
- “How can I pursue Wisdom today?” (Scripture, prayer, accountability, covenant faithfulness)
Be honest. Wisdom meets you in truth.
Step 4: PRAY It Back (60 seconds)
“Lord, guard my eyes. Steady my heart. Lead me to Wisdom, not counterfeits. If married, help me rejoice with the wife of my youth. If single, prepare me for covenant faithfulness. Activate Your wisdom in me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Step 5: TAKE ONE ACTION (60 seconds)
- ✅ Delete one app/account that feeds temptation
- ✅ Send a covenant-affirming text to your wife
- ✅ Set a phone filter/accountability software
- ✅ Memorize Proverbs 4:23 or 5:18 today
Physical action reinforces spiritual commitment.

✅ C — COMMIT to Covenant Faithfulness
Commit to pursuing Wisdom first. Guard your eyes. Honor your covenant. Let Christ lead you to the right path, the right wife, the right life. Faithfulness over fleeting pleasure.
“Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well.” (Proverbs 5:15)

“Lord Jesus, I acknowledge the world’s counterfeit trap. I believe You break every chain. I commit to pursuing Wisdom, guarding my heart, honoring my covenant. Seal me with Your Spirit. Make me Yours. Today and forever. Amen.”
