Friends and family of Divine Timing, I need to address something deeply important today.

Recently, an anonymous brother in our ministry family reached out to me with a heavy heart. He shared that he has been walking with the Lord, but he is struggling with a dangerous theological error. He believes that simply being “born again” is not enough to make it into the Kingdom of God. He believes that following Jesus requires a “total self-denial” that we must achieve through our own difficult efforts, and that until we perfectly perform these works, we are not truly saved.

Brother, if that is you, or if anyone reading this feels this crushing weight, I need you to hear me clearly today: That is a works-based doctrine, and it directly contradicts the pure, finished Gospel of Grace.

THE NIGHTTIME CONVERSATION: UNPACKING JOHN 3

Let’s go back to that nighttime conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus. Jesus looked at this religious leader and said, “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Nicodemus was confused. He asked how a man could enter his mother’s womb a second time. And Jesus clarified in verse 6: “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

When Jesus said you must be “born of water and the Spirit,” He was not instituting a physical ritual or a checklist of works you must perform to earn your way into heaven. He was contrasting our corrupt, fleshly birth with a miraculous, spiritual rebirth. Salvation is not a physical achievement. It is a spiritual miracle wrought by the Holy Spirit.

THE DANGEROUS TRAP OF WORKS-BASED SALVATION

The enemy loves to make the Gospel feel heavy, difficult, and out of reach. He wants you to believe that your “total self-denial” is what saves you. But if salvation depended on our ability to perfectly follow, to never stumble, and to earn it through our own strength, no one would make it.

The Apostle Paul settled this forever in Ephesians 2:8-9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Do you hear that? It is a GIFT. You do not work for a gift. You receive it. We deny ourselves and we follow Jesus because we are saved, not in order to get saved. Discipleship is the fruit of salvation, not the root of it.

THE ASSURANCE OF SALVATION: YOU CAN KNOW

To the brother who said a born-again man is “far away from the knowledge of God” and cannot know he is saved: The Apostle John wrote his entire first epistle to destroy that lie.

1 John 5:13 says: “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may KNOW that ye have eternal life.”

It is not a guessing game. When you ADMIT you are a sinner, BELIEVE Jesus died and rose for you, and CONFESS Him as Lord, you are instantly sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13). The heavy lifting was finished on the cross. Do not let the enemy rob you of your assurance. Rest in the finished work of Christ.
