π Proverbs 1: The Foundation of All Wisdom (Fear of the Lord)
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
β Proverbs 1:7 (KJV)
Friends and family, let’s start at the beginning.
Proverbs chapter 1 isn’t just ancient wisdom. It’s a roadmap for today.
In a world of social media noise, prophetic confusion, and spiritual warfareβProverbs 1 gives us the foundation we need.
Here’s what jumps out at me in this chapter:
- β Wisdom isn’t just knowledgeβit’s instruction, understanding, and interpretation (v.2-6)
- β The fear of the Lord is the starting point (v.7)
- β There’s a warning: don’t follow sinners who entice you with greedy gain (v.10-19)
- β Wisdom cries out in the public squareβjust like we do on social media (v.20-21)
- β There’s a consequence for refusing wisdomβand a promise for those who listen (v.24-33)
This isn’t theory. This is practical, urgent, watchman wisdom.
Let’s walk through it together.
SECTION 1: THE PURPOSE OF PROVERBS β KNOWING WISDOM
Proverbs 1:2-6 sets the stage:
“To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion. A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.”
β Proverbs 1:2-6 (KJV)
Notice the progression:
- π Know wisdom and instruction β Not just head knowledge, but applied truth
- π§ Perceive words of understanding β Discernment, not just information
- βοΈ Receive instruction in justice, judgment, equity β Moral clarity
- π― Give subtilty to the simple β Wisdom makes the naive wise
- π Increase learning β Wisdom compounds over time
- π Understand proverbs and dark sayings β Even the hidden things become clear
This last point hits me hard.
“To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.”
I use this verse when I teach prophecy. Because God conceals a matterβand it’s our glory to search it out (Proverbs 25:2).
Prophecy isn’t always clear on the surface. But for those who seek, who listen, who meditateβthe Holy Spirit reveals the interpretation.
This connects to our 5-Minute Wisdom Activation:
When we speak, ponder, pray, and act on Scriptureβwe’re not just reading words. We’re inviting the Holy Spirit to unlock understanding. To make the “dark sayings” clear.
SECTION 2: THE FOUNDATION β FEAR OF THE LORD
Then comes the cornerstone:
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
β Proverbs 1:7 (KJV)
This isn’t about being afraid of God.
This is about reverence. Awe. Submission. Recognizing who He isβand who we are not.
What “fear of the Lord” means in practice:
- π Reverence β Acknowledging God’s holiness, power, sovereignty
- π Submission β Aligning your will with His commands
- βοΈ Accountability β Living knowing you’ll give an account
- π Worship β Recognizing Him as Source, not yourself
Without this foundation, intelligence becomes dangerous.
Lucifer had brilliant intellect. He fell.
Nebuchadnezzar had unmatched power. He was humbled.
Intelligence without reverence = pride.
Intelligence with reverence = wisdom.
SECTION 3: THE WARNING β DON’T FOLLOW SINNERS
Verses 10-19 hit hard:
“My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause: Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path: For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.”
β Proverbs 1:10-16 (KJV)
This isn’t just ancient advice. This is current events.
When I read about violent regimes, greedy gain, and enticement to join their schemesβI think of Iran. Of the Strait of Hormuz. Of those who lure nations into conflict for profit.
The warning is clear: Run.
How to apply this today:
- π« Don’t consent to sinful enticement (v.10)
- π£ Refrain your foot from their path (v.15)
- π Recognize the motive β greedy gain, not justice (v.13-14)
- β οΈ See the end β their feet run to evil (v.16)
This applies to personal relationships. To business decisions. To geopolitical alliances.
Wisdom says: Don’t follow the crowd when the crowd is running to evil.
SECTION 4: WISDOM’S CRY β THE CITY SQUARE TODAY
Verses 20-21 are powerful:
“Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets: She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying⦔
β Proverbs 1:20-21 (KJV)
The “city square” in ancient times was where people gathered. Where news spread. Where debates happened.
Today? That’s social media.
Facebook. Twitter. Instagram. YouTube. That’s our city square.
And wisdom is crying out.
Wisdom’s message in the digital city square:
- π£οΈ “How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity?” (v.22) β When will you stop chasing shallow content?
- π€ “How long will scorners delight in their scorning?” (v.22) β When will you stop mocking truth?
- π€¦ “And fools hate knowledge” (v.22) β Why reject wisdom when it’s offered?
- π “Turn you at my reproof” (v.23) β Repent. Change direction.
- π§ “I will pour out my spirit unto you” (v.23) β The Holy Spirit is available to those who listen.
This is why we post. Why we teach. Why we warn.
We’re not adding to the noise. We’re crying out wisdom in the digital city square.
SECTION 5: THE CONSEQUENCE β AND THE PROMISE
Verses 24-33 show two paths:
| Those Who Refuse Wisdom | Those Who Listen to Wisdom |
|---|---|
| β Called and refused (v.24) | β Listen and obey (v.33) |
| β Set at nought counsel (v.25) | β Receive reproof (v.23) |
| β Hated knowledge (v.29) | β Love wisdom (v.22) |
| β Would not choose fear of the Lord (v.29) | β Begin with fear of the Lord (v.7) |
| β Eat the fruit of their own way (v.31) | β Dwell safely, quiet from fear (v.33) |
The consequence for refusing wisdom is sobering:
“Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.”
β Proverbs 1:31-32 (KJV)
But the promise for those who listen is beautiful:
“But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.”
β Proverbs 1:33 (KJV)
Safety. Quiet. Freedom from fear of evil.
That’s what wisdom offers. Not just information. Not just rules. Peace.
ποΈ A UNIQUE INVITATION: The Wisdom Path to Salvation
This isn’t about religion. This is about receiving wisdom from the Source.
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
β Proverbs 1:7 (KJV)
The wisest decision you’ll ever makeβ¦ is the simplest.
Here’s the wisdom path. RIGHT NOW:
β A β ACKNOWLEDGE Your Need for Wisdom
You can’t do this alone. Your mind needs redemption. Your choices need grace. Acknowledge your need for Christ’s wisdom in every decision, online or offline.
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.” (James 1:5)
β B β BELIEVE Christ Is the Source of Wisdom
Jesus didn’t just teach wisdom. He IS wisdom (1 Corinthians 1:24). His blood covers your foolish choices. His Spirit guides your future ones.
“But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom.” (1 Corinthians 1:30)
β C β COMMIT to Walking in Wisdom
Commit to letting Christ transform your choices. Online and offline. Every post. Every comment. Every decision. Let Him redeem your digital witness.
“Whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely.” (Proverbs 1:33)
π Pray this from your heart. Right where you are:
“Lord Jesus, I acknowledge my need for Your wisdom. I believe You are the Source of all understanding. I commit to walking in Your ways. Seal me with Your Spirit. Make me Yours. Today and forever. Amen.”
π If you prayed that. Congratulations.
You didn’t achieve it. You received it.
