πŸ“± The Proverbs Guideline for Social Media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter & Beyond)

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”

β€” Proverbs 18:21 (KJV)

Friends and Family, let’s be honest.

Social media can be a battlefield.

Facebook comments filled with insults. Twitter threads dripping with mockery. Instagram posts designed to provoke. YouTube comments showcasing the worst of human nature.

And here’s the hard truth: Christians aren’t exempt. We scroll. We react. We post. Sometimes wisely. Often not.

Here’s what I believe:

The Book of Proverbs is a gold mine for social media conduct. Written 3,000 years ago. Yet perfectly applicable to every post, comment, and share you make today.

This article isn’t about legalism. It’s about wisdom.

Because what you post matters. What you comment matters. What you share matters.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue. Even a digital one.

SECTION 1: WHAT PROVERBS SAYS ABOUT SPEECH

Let’s ground this in Scripture first. Here’s what Proverbs teaches about speech:

Verse Principle
Proverbs 15:1 “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.”
Proverbs 18:21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”
Proverbs 26:20 “Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.”
Proverbs 17:9 “He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.”
Proverbs 12:18 “There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.”
Proverbs 29:11 “A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.”

Now let’s apply this to Facebook. To Instagram. To Twitter. To YouTube comments.

Because these aren’t ancient principles. They’re timeless.

SECTION 2: THE PROVERBS SOCIAL MEDIA CHECKLIST

Before you post. Before you comment. Before you share. Ask yourself these questions:

THE 5-QUESTION PROVERBS CHECKLIST:

  1. πŸ€” Is this TRUE? (Proverbs 12:22 β€” “Lying lips are abomination to the LORD”)
  2. πŸ’™ Is this KIND? (Proverbs 15:1 β€” “A soft answer turneth away wrath”)
  3. πŸ”₯ Does this stir strife or peace? (Proverbs 26:20 β€” “Where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth”)
  4. 🀐 Should I even say this? (Proverbs 29:11 β€” “A wise man keepeth it in till afterwards”)
  5. πŸ‘‘ Does this honor Christ? (Colossians 3:17 β€” “Whatsoever ye do… do all in the name of the Lord Jesus”)

If you can’t answer YES to all five. Don’t post it.

Simple. Biblical. Practical.

SECTION 3: WHAT TO AVOID (PROVERBS WARNINGS)

Proverbs is clear about what NOT to do. Here’s the social media application:

Proverbs Warning Social Media Application
Gossip/Talebearing (Prov 26:20) Don’t share unverified news. Don’t spread rumors. Don’t screenshot private conversations.
Angry Words (Prov 15:18) Don’t comment in anger. Wait. Cool down. Then respond (or don’t).
Mocking/Scoffing (Prov 9:7-8) Don’t mock people for their beliefs, appearance, or mistakes. Correct with gentleness.
False Accusations (Prov 19:5) Don’t accuse without evidence. Don’t pile on bandwagon accusations.
Pride/Boasting (Prov 27:2) Don’t post to impress. Don’t humble-brag. Let others praise you, not yourself.
Quarrelsome Speech (Prov 17:14) Don’t start fights in comments. Don’t feed trolls. Walk away from unnecessary conflict.

Read that list again.

How many times have YOU violated these principles on Facebook? On Twitter? In YouTube comments?

I know I have. And I repent. And I’m learning.

That’s what wisdom is. Not perfection. Growth.

SECTION 4: WHAT TO PURSUE (PROVERBS PROMISES)

It’s not just about avoiding sin. It’s about pursuing wisdom.

Here’s what Proverbs says to DO with your words online:

  • βœ… Speak life (Proverbs 18:21) β€” Encourage, build up, affirm truth
  • βœ… Answer softly (Proverbs 15:1) β€” De-escalate conflict, don’t fuel it
  • βœ… Hold your tongue (Proverbs 29:11) β€” Silence is wisdom when anger rises
  • βœ… Speak health (Proverbs 12:18) β€” Words that heal, not wound
  • βœ… Cover transgressions (Proverbs 17:9) β€” Don’t expose others’ sins unnecessarily
  • βœ… Testify truth (Proverbs 14:5) β€” Be honest, even when it costs you

Imagine if Christians applied this consistently.

Facebook would look different. Twitter would look different. YouTube comments would look different.

We’d be salt and light. Not noise and darkness.

SECTION 5: YOUR DIGITAL WITNESS MATTERS

Here’s why this matters beyond just “being nice.”

Your social media presence is a digital witness for Christ.

People are watching. Believers and unbelievers alike. They see your posts. Your comments. Your shares. Your reactions.

What are you testifying to?

A Christian who posts anger, gossip, and pride isn’t winning souls. They’re pushing them away.

A Christian who posts wisdom, kindness, and truth is shining light in darkness.

Choose wisely.

πŸ•ŠοΈ A UNIQUE INVITATION: The Wisdom Path to Salvation

This isn’t about religion. This is about receiving wisdom from the Source.

“For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.”

β€” Proverbs 2:6 (KJV)

The wisest decision you’ll ever make… is the simplest.

Here’s the wisdom path. RIGHT NOW:

βœ… A β€” ACKNOWLEDGE Your Need for Wisdom

You can’t do this alone. Your tongue needs redemption. Your posts need grace. Acknowledge your need for Christ’s wisdom in every word you speak, online or offline.

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.” (James 1:5)

βœ… B β€” BELIEVE Christ Redeems Your Words

Jesus didn’t just die for your sins. He died for your careless words, your angry comments, your prideful posts. His blood covers it all when you receive Him.

“For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” (Matthew 12:37)

βœ… C β€” COMMIT to a Redeemed Tongue

Commit to letting Christ transform your speech. Online and offline. Every post. Every comment. Every share. Let Him redeem your digital witness.

“Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight.” (Psalm 19:14)

πŸ‘‰ Pray this from your heart. Right where you are:

“Lord Jesus, I acknowledge my need for Your wisdom. I believe You died for my sins, including my careless words. I commit to letting You redeem my tongue, my posts, my comments. Seal me with Your Spirit. Make me Yours. Today and forever. Amen.”

πŸ’™ If you prayed that. Congratulations.
You didn’t achieve it. You received it.
You’re SEALED. (Ephesians 1:13)

Subject line: “I’m Sealed”
I’ll personally welcome you to the family.

πŸ”₯ FINAL WORD: WATCH. PRAY. POST WISELY.

Don’t fear social media. Don’t abandon it. Redeem it.

πŸ“± Your posts matter.

πŸ’¬ Your comments matter.

πŸ‘‘ Your digital witness matters.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue.

“Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.”

β€” Colossians 4:6 (KJV)

Maranatha.

The King is coming. And we’ll proclaim His truth wisely. πŸ™
