“It happened that while He was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples.'”
— Luke 11:1 (NASB)

Is God silent, or have we forgotten how to listen? Discover why the Word of the Lord becomes rare and how returning to the roots of biblical prayer restores His voice.
Church family, let me ask you a hard question. When was the last time you truly heard the voice of God? Not just a fleeting thought, but a clear, undeniable whisper of the Holy Spirit? If you are struggling to answer, you are not alone. In a generation that is constantly connected to everything except the Creator, the question of why God’s voice seems rare is the most critical question we can ask.
WHEN THE WORD OF THE LORD WAS RARE
In 1 Samuel 3:1, Scripture records a chilling reality: “Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was rare in those days, there was no frequent vision.” (ESV)
God wasn’t dead. He hadn’t lost His power. But His voice had become scarce. Why? Because Israel was in a period of tremendous spiritual deterioration. The priesthood was corrupt, sin was rampant, and the people had drifted into apathy. But notice what happens next. God calls out, “Samuel! Samuel!” When the voice of God becomes rare, God always raises up someone willing to listen. The question is, will it be you?
THE DISCIPLES’ PRAYER (NOT JUST THE LORD’S PRAYER)
The disciples came to Jesus with the exact same hunger. They didn’t ask Him to teach them how to preach, or how to do miracles. They asked, “Lord, teach us to pray.” (Luke 11:1). Jesus gave them a pattern, but notice what He didn’t do. He didn’t start with a list of personal demands.
He started with: “Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done.” He shifted their focus from their will to His will. Furthermore, in Matthew 6:13, Jesus teaches them to pray, “deliver us from the evil one.” The Greek expression apo tou ponērou points to a personal enemy—Satan. Jesus was teaching them to pray for protection from spiritual opposition, not just abstract evil.
THE MOTIVE CHECK: “YOU HAVE NOT BECAUSE YOU ASK NOT”
James 4:2-3 hits us like a hammer: “You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.”
Church family, have we turned prayer into a cosmic vending machine, asking God to bless our agenda, rather than surrendering to His? If our prayers are solely focused on getting our own desires fulfilled, we will remain spiritually deaf. True prayer begins with God’s holiness, not our happiness.
THE GETHSEMANE WARNING: “COULDN’T YOU WATCH WITH ME?”
At one of the most consequential moments in human history, Jesus is agonizing in prayer, and He turns to His closest friends and asks, “So, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:40-41)
Today, we frequently tell one another, “I’m praying for you.” But are we really? Or are we just too distracted by our modern idols—our phones, our careers, our comfort—to sit in the quiet for one hour? The spirit may be willing, but if we do not deliberately devote ourselves to prayer, the flesh will always win.
MODERN IDOLATRY & DELIBERATE DEVOTION
In Isaiah 64:7, the prophet cries out, “There is no one who calls on Your name, who arouses himself to take hold of You.” Sometimes we ask, “Why isn’t God speaking?” when Scripture first asks us, “Are you seeking Him?”
Idolatry isn’t just bowing to carved statues. An idol is anything that occupies the devotion, trust, and priority that belongs to God. If ancient Israel surrounded itself with idols and stopped hearing clearly from God, have modern believers simply replaced visible idols with more sophisticated ones? Colossians 4:2 commands us to “Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving.” Biblical prayer is not something squeezed into whatever time remains after everything else receives our attention.
THE ABCs OF SALVATION
The ultimate prayer is the prayer of salvation. If you have never truly surrendered your heart to the Lord, do not wait. Secure your eternity today!
- A — ADMIT You’re a Sinner (Romans 3:23)
- B — BELIEVE Jesus Died and Rose (Romans 5:8)
- C — CONFESS Him as Lord (Romans 10:9)
Pray this from your heart: “Lord Jesus, I admit I’m a sinner. I believe You died for me and rose again. I confess You as my Lord and Savior. Teach me to pray, and write my name in the Lamb’s Book of Life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
⚡ 5-MINUTE ACTIVATION: RETURN TO THE ROOTS
Take 5 minutes today to strip prayer back to its biblical roots and align your heart with His will.
Step 1: READ Matthew 6:9-13 & James 4:3 (60 sec)
Read these verses aloud. Declare: “I seek Your kingdom first. I surrender my will to Yours.”
Step 2: PRAY the Motive Audit (90 sec)
“Lord, forgive me for treating prayer like a wish list. Purify my motives. Help me to watch and pray, and deliver me from the evil one. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Step 3: ACT (60 sec)
Put your phone in another room for 15 minutes today. Sit in absolute silence with your Bible, and simply listen.
⏱️ Total time: 5 minutes. 🔥 Result: Focused. Surrendered. Listening.
Church family, the solution to spiritual deafness isn’t discovering some new technique for hearing God. The answer is much older, and much simpler. It is time to return to the roots. Reverence God. Seek His kingdom. Submit to His will. Confess sin. Forgive others. Ask with pure motives. Remain persistent.
Walk in the quietness of His presence, and keep your eyes fixed on the returning King. Grace and peace until the Morning Star appears, brothers and sisters.
