If I am honest with you, I love my life. I love my family. I love waking up with the sunrise, hearing the birds, and drinking my morning coffee while I open up the Word of God. I love the life God has given me. And because I love it, the thought of the day my heart stops beating scares me. But lately, the Holy Spirit has been challenging me. Are we, as Christians, thinking about death completely wrong?

THE ILLUSION OF “TOO SOON”

We look at Jesus. He only lived 33 years. If we died at 33, we would call it a tragedy. But Jesus wasn’t early. He finished the work His Father gave Him to do. And when He faced the cross, He wasn’t terrified of death itself; He was dreading the weight of our sin. Because He knew exactly where He was going. Because of the joy set before Him, He endured the cross.

THE ANESTHESIA OF ETERNITY (PAUL’S PROMISE)

The Apostle Paul got the memo. He said, “To live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Gain! Not loss. Gain! He said that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. He wasn’t talking about death like it was a terrifying enemy. He was talking about it like walking from one room into a much better room.

Think about when you go under general anesthesia for a surgery. You close your eyes in the operating room, and a second later, you open your eyes in the recovery room. As far as your consciousness is concerned, no time passed at all. I believe death for the Christian will feel exactly like that. You close your eyes here, and you open them there. In paradise. In the arms of Jesus.

Jesus told Martha, “Whoever believes in me, though he die physically, yet shall he live. And everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.” Physical death cannot interrupt eternal life. It is not even a speed bump on the freeway of eternity. It is just a doorway.

THE CATERPILLAR’S COCOON (THE TWINKLING OF AN EYE)

Think about a caterpillar. It crawls in the dirt. Then it spins a cocoon—like a little mini coffin—and disappears. But what comes out? A butterfly. A creature that once crawled in the dirt now flies above it.

Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15, “In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, we shall be changed.” The perishable puts on the imperishable. The earthly life gives way to the heavenly life. Death doesn’t get the final word. Jesus does.

🔥 THE WATCHMAN’S PERSPECTIVE: THEY DIDN’T LOSE, THEY WON

Watchmen, we are living in the end times. We just read in Revelation 20 about the martyrs who were beheaded for their faith. They didn’t lose. They won. They are reigning with Christ right now.

If we are going to stand firm in the days ahead, we must stop clinging to this life as if it is better than the Giver. We must stop being slaves to the fear of death. Jesus came to destroy the one who had the power of death and deliver those who were held in slavery by the fear of death.

Death is not your master. Death serves your Master. It is just a servant standing at the doorway, waiting for the Father to say, “It’s time.” And when He does, you will gladly go.
