Watchmen, the cosmic conflict is reaching its absolute climax. We have reached Revelation chapter 20. The Final Boss arrives, and He handles His business.

To understand the magnitude of this chapter, we must look back at the wilderness temptation in the Gospels. Satan confronted Jesus, trying to act as the final boss. He offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the world if He would just bow down. But the Lord rejected him. He commanded him to go away.

THE FINAL BOSS ARRIVES (VERSES 1-3)

Now, in Revelation 20, we see a massive role reversal. An angel comes down from heaven, holding the key to the abyss and a great chain. I believe this mystery angel is the Angel of the Lord. Jesus has unfinished business with the devil.

But this time, there is no invitation for the devil to repent. The Lord takes hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, and binds him for a thousand years. This is Satan’s third defeat. He lost in the desert, he lost at the cross and the resurrection, and now he is bound and thrown into the bottomless pit. He will face his fourth and final defeat when he is cast into the lake of fire.

THE THRONES AND THE TRIBULATION REWARD (VERSES 4-6)

Then John sees thrones, and judgment is given to them. I believe this describes the 24 elders taking their seats to reign and judge.

And then, we see the souls of those who had been beheaded for their testimony of Jesus, who refused to worship the beast or receive his mark. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. This is the ultimate encouragement for those who are left behind during the seven-year tribulation. We don’t want anyone left behind, but if they are, this is their glorious reward.

SATAN’S ULTIMATE DEFEAT (VERSES 7-10)

When the thousand years are completed, Satan is released for a short time. He deceives the nations, Gog and Magog, to gather them for war. But fire comes down from heaven and devours them. The devil who deceived them is thrown into the lake of fire, where the beast and the false prophet already are. The usurper is finally removed from the board.

⚠️ THE GREAT WHITE THRONE JUDGMENT (VERSES 11-15)

And now we reach the most terrifying section of the chapter. The Great White Throne Judgment. John sees a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away.

The dead, the great and the small, stand before the throne. Books are opened. Another book is opened, which is the Book of Life. The dead are judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds.

Why are they judged by their deeds? Because they rejected grace. They will be judged by the law. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the Book of Life, they are thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death. There is no escape for all eternity. The stakes are infinitely high for human souls.
