Friends and watchmen of Divine Timing, I have to start with this. Over the last few weeks, multiple people have asked for this story. When that happens, I know it’s not just a trend. It’s a divine appointment. So here we go.
We all know the story of Sandy Olsson. The sweet Australian exchange student. The high school romance. The leather jacket. The twist contest. For decades, people have looked back on Grease with a sense of warm nostalgia. But what if we’re missing the deeper layer? What if Sandy’s journey wasn’t just about a summer fling… but about a voice that was preparing for something much bigger than high school?
Sandy reflects back on her younger years. She remembers the pressure. The heartbreak. The feeling of losing herself in a world that didn’t always value her innocence. But she also remembers her gift. Her voice. For years, she thought it was just a talent. Something that brought applause. Something that led to fame. But as an older woman looking back, she realizes something profound: God doesn’t waste a single experience.
THE ILLUSION OF THE STAGE VS. THE REALITY OF THE STEWARD
In the movie, the climax is a dance number. It’s about the audience cheering. It’s about the moment of fame. But the Bible gives us a different climax. In Matthew 25, Jesus tells the Parable of the Talents. He doesn’t talk about who got the most applause. He talks about stewardship.
The Master gave talents to his servants. Not to hoard. Not to hide. But to use. To multiply. To invest. The “talent” wasn’t just money; it was ability. It was trust. It was God-given capacity.
Sandy realizes that her voice—her ability to sing, to move hearts, to lead worship—was a talent entrusted to her. The danger wasn’t in using it. The danger was in using it for her own glory rather than God’s. The stage lights fade. The record sales stop. The awards gather dust. But the stewardship of the gift is what echoes into eternity.
The Heartbeat: You don’t need a spotlight to be significant. You just need to be faithful with what God placed in your hands. Whether it’s a voice, a skill, a trade, or a kind word… it’s all preparation.
REHEARSAL FOR ETERNITY: ARE YOUR GIFTS JUST SEEDS?
Sandy closes her eyes and imagines standing before Jesus. No stage lights. No record sales. No awards. Only worship.
She wonders aloud: “What if the gifts God gives us here are only the beginning? What if the musician continues making music? What if the artist continues creating beauty? What if the teacher continues teaching?”
This is a staggering thought. Revelation 5 and 15 show us a heaven filled with singing, harps, and worship. It’s not a place of static silence. It’s a place of active, creative, eternal praise. If that’s the case, then your earthly talent isn’t just a random hobby. It’s a seed. Planted now, watered by your faithfulness, meant to bloom in His Kingdom.
Maybe the voice you have today is just a whisper compared to the roar of praise you’ll offer when you see Him face to face. Maybe the kindness you show your neighbor is practice for the compassion you’ll carry as a king and priest in the New Jerusalem.
THE DANGER OF COMPARISON VS. THE POWER OF YOUR OWN GIFT
Sandy encourages listeners not to compare their gifts with others. In high school, it’s easy to look at the “cool kids” and feel inadequate. In life, it’s easy to look at famous influencers and feel like your talent doesn’t matter. But the Parable of the Talents is clear: The Master gave “to every man according to his several ability” (Matt 25:15).
You don’t have to have a million followers. You don’t have to have a golden voice. You just have to have a faithful heart. The servant who buried his talent was condemned not because he did “evil,” but because he did nothing. He let fear paralyze him.
Sandy’s final realization is a mirror for all of us: “Maybe the gifts God gave you were never meant to end when your life on earth ends. Maybe they’re only the rehearsal for the beautiful work you’ll do forever in His kingdom.”
