Proverbs 16: Solomon Exposes the Illusion of Control in 2026

We live in an age obsessed with control. We map out our lives on glowing screens, we curate our public images, and we draft our messages to control the narrative. We believe we are the masters of our destiny. But in Proverbs chapter 16, King Solomon steps through the corridors of time to shatter that illusion. He is here to teach us, to warn us, and to expose the hidden motives of our hearts.
THE ILLUSION OF CONTROL & GOD’S X-RAY VISION (VERSES 1-3, 9)
Solomon opens with a profound truth: “The plans of the heart belong to a person, But the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.” And again in verse 9: “The mind of a person plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps.”
We spend our lives planning, but God holds the pen. And here is the chilling reality for the 2026 digital age: “All the ways of a person are clean in his own sight, But the Lord examines the motives.” You post your virtues for the world to see, but God looks past the filter, past the screen, and pierces directly into the hidden chambers of your heart. He sees the pride. He sees the jealousy. He sees the hidden agendas. You cannot hide from the All-Seeing Eye.
THE DEADLY PATH OF PRIDE (VERSES 5, 18, 25)
I look at our culture, and I see a generation intoxicated by pride. But Solomon warns: “Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord; Be assured, he will not go unpunished.”
Verse 18 is one of the most famous in all of Scripture: “Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before stumbling.” I see our boastful leaders, our arrogant influencers, our defiant nations. They strut and boast, believing they are untouchable. But their pride is building their own trap.
And what of your paths? “There is a way which seems right to a person, But its end is the way of death.” We have redefined truth. We follow the way that seems right to our feelings and our culture. But that broad road leads only to destruction. The highway of the upright is to turn away from evil.
THE SCORCHING FIRE & THE CULTURE OF OUTRAGE (VERSES 24, 27-28, 32)
Solomon exposes our digital arenas. “A worthless person digs up evil, and his words are like scorching fire. A perverse person spreads strife, and a slanderer separates close friends.” We use our keyboards to destroy reputations and spread division. But “Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” Why do we choose fire when we could speak honey?
We are an angry generation. Quick to outrage, quick to condemn. But listen to the ultimate standard of strength in verse 32: “One who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And one who rules his spirit, than one who captures a city.” True strength is not found in a viral rant. True strength is found in self-control. In a world that rewards the loudest voice, the one who rules his spirit is the true conqueror.
THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD OVER THE END TIMES (VERSES 4, 33)
Do not be deceived by the chaos of your times. “The Lord has made everything for its own purpose, Even the wicked for the day of evil.” God is using even the wicked to fulfill His prophetic timeline.
And the chapter closes with this beautiful anchor for the watchman: “The lot is cast into the lap, But its every decision is from the Lord.” History is not spinning out of control. The rise and fall of nations, the shifting of borders, the turmoil in our streets—it is all under the sovereign hand of the Almighty. He is directing the steps. He is examining the hearts.

Pray this from your heart: “Lord Jesus, I admit I’m a sinner. I believe You died for me and rose again. I confess You as my Lord and Savior. Write my name in the Lamb’s Book of Life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
