Friends and family of Divine Timing, as I begin creating this article for Bible Stories by Legends with the encore of Mel Gibson and his new film coming soon, The Resurrection of the Christ, I realize just by creating this article what a massive undertaking he’s going through.

I feel the weight of this myself just putting this together. How can anybody humanly do it? Not possible in my opinion. But as Mel said regarding his movie, “I’ll give it a shot.”

The one thing I can tell you that I have the best interest in for you, regarding our ministry family, is we’re going to do our best to let Scripture tell the story to us. And that’s what I’m going to attempt to do here.

As you go through the article, you might see something in the movie next year that just doesn’t quite fit. We will see what happens. No doubt Gibson has lots of theological experts helping him put the movie together. But let’s not forget, he’s a Catholic and not a born-again, Holy Spirit-filled Christian. There is a difference, and I need to make sure the audience understands it.

This article is going to attempt to frame it correctly so that if there are errors, we’ll have addressed some of them now and some of them after the movie has been released.

But make no mistake, this is probably in my opinion the greatest cinematic creation of an altar call since the church age was born 2,000 years ago. And it might be the last before the pre-tribulation rapture of the church.

Down below further in the article, Mel is going to come on and you will want to listen. But I haven’t embedded the ABCs of salvation in this article’s audio. Make no mistake about it, you need to take action if you are not saved and born again with your name in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

I’m taking advantage of this great altar call to the full extent of my abilities. People need to be saved and going to heaven because the days, as Paul said, are evil. There’s deception, there’s treachery and lies, and a person doesn’t know what the truth is because the seed that has been sown in their hearts fell on rocky ground, or the cares of this life have choked the message.

THE MYTH OF THE “HARROWING OF HELL”

Let’s get one thing straight right out of the gate: The Bible does NOT teach that Jesus went into “Hell” during those 3 days.

Yes, Scripture says He went into “the heart of the earth” (Matthew 12:40) and “the lower parts of the earth” (Ephesians 4:9). But we need to understand what that actually means.

Before Jesus died on the cross, there were TWO separate compartments in the Earth, or at least there was. Hades was divided into:

• Abraham’s Bosom (Paradise) — The place of comfort for the righteous dead
• The Place of Torment — The place of suffering for the unrighteous dead

Jesus Himself told the story of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16. And what did Abraham tell the rich man?

“Between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those pass from there to us.” — Luke 16:26 (NKJV)

A great gulf. Fixed. No crossing. No exceptions.

So when Jesus was hanging on the cross and the thief beside Him said, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom,” what did Jesus say?

“Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” — Luke 23:43 (NKJV)

Not “Hell.” Not “the place of torment.” Paradise. Abraham’s Bosom.

WHAT JESUS ACTUALLY DID DURING THOSE 3 DAYS

So if Jesus didn’t go into “Hell” to suffer, what did He do during those 3 days?

He went to Paradise. Abraham’s Bosom. And He did something monumental.

Ephesians 4:8-10 tells us:

“Therefore He says: ‘When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men.’ (Now this, ‘He ascended’—what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.)” — Ephesians 4:8-10 (NKJV)

He “led captivity captive.” What does that mean?

It means He took all the Old Testament saints who were waiting in Abraham’s Bosom—the righteous who had died looking forward to the Messiah—and He brought them with Him when He ascended into Heaven.

Paradise was emptied. The captives were freed. And now, when a believer dies, they are “absent from the body” and “present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8).

No more waiting in Abraham’s Bosom. No more intermediate state. Now it’s just Hades (the place of torment for the unsaved dead) and Heaven (the presence of God for the saved).

That’s what Jesus did during those 3 days. He didn’t go to “Hell.” He went to Paradise, emptied it, and brought the captives home.

THE SPIRITUAL WARFARE BEHIND THE SCENES

Now, Mel Gibson has mentioned that there’s going to be “spiritual warfare” behind the making of this film. And he’s absolutely right.

Because what he’s attempting to portray is not just a historical event. It’s the culmination of a battle that’s been raging since before creation.

Let’s go back to the beginning.

Before Adam and Eve. Before the Garden of Eden. Before the fall of man. There was a war in Heaven.

Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 describe the fall of Lucifer. He was the anointed cherub, the cover, the most beautiful of all God’s creation. But pride entered his heart.

“How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.'” — Isaiah 14:12-14 (NKJV)

He wanted to be God. And so he rebelled. And a third of the angels followed him.

Revelation 12:7-9 describes the war:

“And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.” — Revelation 12:7-9 (NKJV)

That’s the battle that’s been raging ever since. And it’s not just a spiritual reality. It’s playing out in our world right now.

Paul told the Ephesians:

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” — Ephesians 6:12 (NKJV)

We’re not fighting people. We’re fighting spiritual forces. And Mel Gibson knows that. That’s why he’s asking for prayer. That’s why he’s saying there will be “spiritual warfare” behind the making of this film.

Because the enemy doesn’t want this story told. He doesn’t want people to understand the magnitude of what Christ accomplished. He doesn’t want the greatest cinematic altar call in history to reach the lost.

So pray for Mel. Pray for the cast. Pray for the crew. Pray that the enemy’s schemes are thwarted and that this film reaches the hearts it’s meant to reach.

THE GREATEST CINEMATIC ALTAR CALL IN HISTORY

Now, let’s talk about why this matters. Why this film is not just entertainment. Why it’s a prophetic sign of the times.

We are on the cusp of the church age closing. The rapture is imminent. And when the church departs, God’s government of authority switches from the church to Israel.

During the tribulation, Israel will be in charge of the message. It will function through the two witnesses and the 144,000 Jewish witnesses.

But right now? Right now is the time of grace. Right now is the day of salvation.

And this film—this $200 million masterpiece—could be the greatest cinematic altar call in the history of humanity. It could reach millions of souls before the church departs.

Because what Mel Gibson is attempting to put together really happened. And it will happen again. Jesus is coming back.

First for the church in a pre-tribulation rapture. And then seven short years later, His literal, physical appearing at the Second Coming.

And every human ever created is going to have to appear at a judgment.

THE TWO JUDGMENTS: WHERE WILL YOU STAND?

Christians will appear at the Judgment Seat of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:10). This is not a judgment for salvation. It’s a judgment for rewards. It’s where we give an account of what we did with what God gave us.

But non-believers? They will appear at the Great White Throne Judgment (Revelation 20:11-15).

And let me tell you something: That is not a place you want to be showing up at.

Revelation 20:15 says:

“And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.” — Revelation 20:15 (NKJV)

Hell is real. The lake of fire is for all eternity. And people will never be able to escape it.

But here’s the good news: You don’t have to go there.

Jesus Christ died for your sins. He was buried. He rose again. And He’s offering you eternal life as a free gift.

All you have to do is accept it.

SATAN’S ULTIMATE DEFEAT

And here’s the final piece of the puzzle. The battle that started before creation? It’s going to end.

Revelation 20:10 tells us:

“The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.” — Revelation 20:10 (NKJV)

Satan is ultimately defeated. He will be cast into the bottomless pit, and then into the lake of fire. Forever.

The war is over. The victory is won. And all who are in Christ will reign with Him forever.
