Revelation 9: Actual Encounters of the Third Kind â The Locusts from the Bottomless Pit
“And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.”

The bottomless pit is opened. The locusts emerge. This is not a metaphor. This is an actual encounter.

Friends and Bible study group of Divine Timing, you remember the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind? Well, get ready for this: Revelation chapter 9 is describing actual encounters of the third kind. But these aren’t friendly visitors from another planet. These are demonic entities from another realm. Lets just say Stephen Speilberg and his “Disclosure Day” movie has NOTHING on what will actually happen someday on the earth during this time.
In Revelation 9, verses 1 and 2, something strikes me immediately. The star that falls is a heavenly being, obviously. I’m not sure if this is one of God’s angels or Satan’s angels. But he was given a key to the bottomless pit. And we know who has the keys to the bottomless pit. None other than Jesus Himself as He told us He holds the keys.
I’m almost imagining verses 1 and 2 as a volcano eruption. And I’m wondering if there are any candidates for volcanoes in the Middle East or Europe with seismic activity. Because what we have here is the Bible calling them actual locusts that come out of the earth. Which means the locust insects we have on earth now are a depiction of the real thing in the earth.
THE BOTTOMLESS PIT: A VOLCANIC PRISON
The bottomless pit (Greek: abyssos) is a real place. It’s a prison for fallen angels and demonic entities. And in Revelation 9, it’s being opened like a volcanic eruption.
The smoke rises “like the smoke of a great furnace.” The sun and air are darkened. This isn’t a gentle opening. This is catastrophic. This is seismic. This is the earth itself groaning as the prison doors are unlocked.
And I’ve seen unredacted military video files of UFO activity around volcanoes. Little dots zigzagging around them, and you know they’re not normal. Could it be that these volcanic regions are thin places where the spiritual and physical realms intersect? Where the bottomless pit is closest to the surface?
THE LOCUSTS: NOT METAPHOR, BUT ACTUAL ENTITIES
I’m coming to the conclusion that these beings described in Revelation 9 are actual entities that torture souls in Hades. And the reason why is because of what they do to men on the earth for five months: torture.
So it seems this is what their purpose is for. They also have the ability to harm the grass, but God forbids them to do thisâonly to hurt men that do not have the mark that God has sealed on His 144,000.
The interesting notation is it’s going to be so grievous that men will want to die but cannot die. Imagine that. The torment is so severe that death would be a mercy, but death flees from them.
THE TERRIFYING DESCRIPTION: FACES OF MEN, HAIR OF WOMEN
And then we get into the depiction of the locusts. What do they look like? This is where it gets descriptive instead of exact. But listen carefully:
Revelation 9:7-10 (KJV):
- â “Like unto horses prepared for battle”
- â “On their heads were as it were crowns like gold”
- â “Their faces were as the faces of men” (That’s actual!)
- â “They had hair as the hair of women” (Long hair)
- â “Their teeth were as the teeth of lions”
- â “They had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron”
- â “The sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots and many horses running to battle”
- â “They had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails”
Breastplate of iron means if anything tries to attack them militarily, they will be able to fend it off. I would anticipate that men will try to take out these locusts to no avail. Hence the reason for the battle armor.
They also have tails like scorpions where they will sting people. And the power to hurt men is in that tail.
THE KING: ABADDON/APOLLYON
And check this out? We know from the Old Testament, I think it’s in the Book of Proverbs, that locusts do not have a king. But these actually have a king. Wow! That tells a story.
The king of these locusts will probably be in command, instructing how to hurt the men of the earth. And in the Hebrew his name is Abaddon, and in the Greek, Apollyon.
Who is Abaddon/Apollyon?
- Abaddon (Hebrew): Means “destruction” or “place of destruction”
- Apollyon (Greek): Means “destroyer”
- Identity: Some believe this could be Satan himself, or a high-ranking demon prince
- Role: The commander of these locust armies, the overseer of torment
This is not a metaphor. This is an actual being with a name, a title, and an army. And he is being released.
THE FIVE MONTHS: LIMITED BUT TERRIFYING
Notice something crucial: their power is limited to five months. This isn’t forever. God has set boundaries even on demonic torment.
But five months of this? It will feel like an eternity. Men will seek death and will not find it. They will desire to die, and death will flee from them.
This is the reality of the fifth trumpet. This is what happens when the bottomless pit is opened. And we’re not even at the sixth and seventh trumpets yet.
This is not science fiction. This is prophetic reality.

The locusts can only hurt those who do not have the seal of God. Make sure you are sealed. Take 5 minutes to secure your position in Christ.

Step 1: CONFIRM Your Salvation (60 sec)
Are you born again? Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? If not, do it now. Pray: “Lord Jesus, I believe in You. I accept You as my Savior. Seal me with Your Holy Spirit.”
Step 2: RENEW Your Mind (90 sec)
Read Ephesians 1:13-14 aloud. “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.”
Step 3: PRAY for Protection (90 sec)
Pray for the 144,000 who will be sealed during the Tribulation. Pray for those who will face the fifth trumpet. Pray: “Lord, protect Your people. Strengthen the sealed. Have mercy on those who do not know You.”
