Gunny Highway here. I’ve spent my life around warriors. Some made it back. Some didn’t. All of us left pieces of ourselves on the ground.

When I read about Joab—David’s battle-hardened commander—I see a man I would’ve served with. Tough as field leather. Loyal to the bone. You’d want him watching your six when hell broke loose. But Joab carried baggage. Pride. A temper. Flaws that followed him everywhere.

Abishai, one of the Mighty Men? He wasn’t born a hero. He was forged in fire. He stood firm when the enemy surrounded them. No superpowers. Just grit, loyalty, and the discipline to hold the line when everything in him wanted to break.

I’ve known men like that. I’ve been a man like that.

Here’s what sixty years of combat and Scripture taught me: God doesn’t wait for perfect men. He never has. He looks for willing men. Broken, scarred, imperfect men who are willing to answer the roll call.

Joab wasn’t perfect. Abishai wasn’t flawless. The Marines I trained weren’t saints. They were sinners who learned to cover each other’s flanks.

And God? He’s the ultimate General. He doesn’t require perfection. He requires willingness.
